Back in 1990, Charles Rosen submitted to a blindfold listening of historic piano recordings and expanded and expounded on what and whom was heard. The cassette recorder was low quality but his remarks were high calibre and worth hearing.
My first of too few meetings with him. The last time Rosen had a story about his friend W.H. Auden who was rushing off to England: “I must go at once my father is dying! I must go and tell him!” After Auden returned, Rosen asked what had happened. Auden: “I went to him and he asked ‘ Son, am I dying?’ and I said ‘Yes!’
